Brutalist Interior
Inspired by brutalist architecture featured in science fiction media.
This project reimagines brutalism, transforming the style to provide a light and minimal interior space. The design applies improvements in building technology that have been made since the style emerged. As this project was inspired by the use of brutalism in science fiction media, this interior was also designed based on technology currently in development and potential societal changes that could affect building design in the future.

Although the use of raw concrete often defines brutalist architecture, rammed earth was chosen. The rough texture of the rammed earth walls provides a rough aesthetic, similar to the raw concrete seen in brutalist architecture. The thermal mass properties of rammed earth and reduced greenhouse gas emissions compared to concrete also made rammed earth a more suitable choice.
The central courtyard was strategically placed to maximize natural light while providing a connection to nature. The colonnades placed on two sides of the courtyard allow natural light to flow gently into the corridors leading to the private areas of the home.
The floor in the dining room, kitchen, and living room is lowered and raised in certain areas to facilitate interaction at different levels in these spaces.
The selected furniture also complements the minimal aesthetic of the architecture, prioritizing the honesty of the bare materials and function over decoration.
