Contemporary Victorian Home
The Victorian era saw numerous emerging architectural styles, most of which were characterized by detailed ornamentation. This project incorporates elements from the architectural styles of the Victorian Era, with additional features found in farmhouses.
There have been many changes in residential architecture since the Victorian Era. To design this home, architectural plans from the Victorian Era were referenced to ensure that the programming remained suitable for a contemporary home, while remaining faithful to the conventions of that period.

During the Victorian Era, kitchens were not considered to be the heart of the home, they were functional spaces meant for working. Kitchens today are designed to accommodate the numerous changes that have taken place within our society. As the heart of the home, this kitchen was designed to be a place where people could gather, while offering a functional layout that is suitable for cooking. The design of the kitchen island pays homage to the worktables that were commonly seen in Victorian Era kitchens. The millwork at both ends of the island were done in a rustic style, uniting the contrasting farmhouse and Victorian Era design styles. The colours within the kitchen were selected from heritage colour collections, evoking a pleasant feeling of familiarity that is rooted in historical design.
The elaborate millwork seen throughout the home complements the glamorous, contemporary furnishings, creating interior spaces that unite traditional and contemporary design.
The large bedroom windows also provide ample natural light, and are arranged to create a comfortable seating area within the bedroom.
Victorian Era interiors were known for ornate, glamorous furniture. Thus, the pieces in this bedroom were selected to create a space that also felt glamorous, but from a contemporary perspective. The use of black provides a harmonious contrast between the various pieces within the space. The Vertigo pendant lamp was chosen to complement the ornate ceiling rose, and a contemporary interpretation of a Persian rug was selected because the elaborate designs of Persian rugs made them very desirable during the Victorian Era.
