Mid-Century Kanso
This project unites Mid-Century Modern design with design styles from Japan and China. Similar to Mid-Century Modern architecture and interior design, Japanese architecture is known for minimal forms, functionality, and connection to nature. The marriage of these principles with elements found in traditional Chinese interior design, creates a harmonious space that transcends time periods and regions.
The warm browns in this interior were paired with off-white, soft greens, deep oranges, and subtle touches of black.
The circular openings in the entryway and bedroom were inspired by Chinese garden moon gates and the round windows seen in Japanese tea pavilions. Along with Kanso, the Shizen principle was implemented within this interior. Beyond the shoji screens in each room, the engawa, the covered porch wrapping around the home, bridges the interior spaces to the tranquil gardens.
